This
movie is actually pretty amazing. It chronicles the life and tiems of George
Jung (Johnny Depp, Benny & Joon), a
native of Boston who ends up on the Beach in southern California, where he
becomes a very heavy marijuana user. After running into old friends from back
home, he realizes the supply and demand of pot are different across the
continent, and so he begins to traffic tons of marijuana from the heart of
mexico to his base in LA, and then using stewardesses, he propels the junk to
the eastcoast and makes catastrophic amounts of profit.
George
gets a little caught up in his success, as different opportunities and
acquaintances bring him new perils and problems, and with wife and child in
tow, George can’t do much to keep it together. Soon he is out on the streets, a
junkie, and with only one more deal to get him back on his feet, he ends up in
a federal prison.
The
picture of the man is a very gracious and kind one, and one of a normal guy who
is just trying to figure our how to get ahead and stay happy, not a harmer of
children, not a doer of evil. It’s a rare shade of grace in the midst of a dark
world. Blow isn’t really even told darkly, it’s pretty resilient as a film,
but, it’s epilogue could potentially bring one to tears. 2.
